Board of Directors

Stephen Bromage is Education Director at the Maine Historical Society. Among his responsibilities is the Maine Memory Network, a vast online resource of primary source materials used in schools throughout the state. A former SAP associate, Bromage received an M.A. in Public History from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. In conjunction with Board member John Sears he has been instrumental in helping SAP make the transition from producing documentaries to also creating education products, with partners both local and national.

John Sears, PhD, is an Associate Editor of the Eleanor Roosevelt papers and former Executive Director of the Franklin & Eleanor Roosevelt Institute in Hyde Park. Sears has been invaluable in helping the organization develop products and relationships with education organizations and funders; he provides a steady eye and ear to the difficulties of managing a small organization. Sears also has considerable experience developing an online educational resource, as he helped found The New Deal Network. His deep experience in public history has been helpful in assessing audience and usability issues related to The Disability History Museum. Currently, he is working on a book about Eleanor Roosevelt’s relationship to the founding years of Israel.

Chris Palames is Executive Director of Independent Living Resources, providing training and technical assistance to a wide range of audiences on the implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act and other disability rights legislation. He also serves as President of the Disability Policy Consortium, an advocacy organization that focuses on state and municipal policies advancing disability rights, economic opportunity and community based services. He has many years’ experience and a wide network of associates in disability organizations.

Laurie Block is co-founder and Executive Director of Straight Ahead Pictures and works full time for the organization. For more than 15 years her work has concentrated on the history of the body, especially disability issues. Her research interests focus on the historical presentation of health in film, radio and popular culture, from P.T. Barnum to sexology. A more complete bio is available in our staff description.

John Crowley, co-founder and Vice President of SAP. A novelist and teacher of fiction writing and screenwriting at Yale University, he was recently named Director of the Yale Summer Session Writing Program. Crowley is the author of eleven novels, and the recipient of numerous awards including a World Fantasy Life Achievement Award and an Award in Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He finds it gratifying that most of his fiction is still in print.

Each major project at Straight Ahead Pictures has its own advisory committee of scholars.
